Increasing GPs’ earnings by $50,000 or increasing the opportunities for procedural work may be needed to lure more junior doctors into choosing general practice as a career, a new report says.

A survey of 532 junior doctors found that most had salary expectations similar to those of the earnings of specialists, of around $330,000, while the average GP salary is $180,000.

The study released this week by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social
Research found that junior doctors would be prepared to trade up to 25% of their annual income in exchange for greater control over their working hours and opportunities to do procedural work.

In particular, most doctors said they would take a lower salary to avoid being on call, and for a better work-life balance.

The report notes that there are currently 2352 junior doctors starting postgraduate training, and 938 first year GP trainee places. However, the number of GP trainee places is set to expand to 1200 by 2014, and therefore new policies will be needed to recruit an extra 260 GP trainees.

The authors suggest that offering more procedural work would have the same effect as increasing GP earnings by $50,000 in attracting trainees.

However, they note that many GPs have ceased procedural practice such as obstetrics, and therefore strategies to reverse this trend, such as new medical indemnity insurance arrangements, are needed to enhance the attractiveness of general practice.
