As quoted from the article in MJA by By Paul Smith:

MJA More than 80% of international medical students say they want to complete their internships in Australia, with only 7% wanting to return home, a newly published survey reveals.

The looming crisis in medical training places has led to concerns that international students studying medicine in Australia are being denied intern places — despite spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on their courses.

But academics from the University of Melbourne said the numbers of international students in the health system represented a “major potential resource” in filling medical workforce vacancies.

In a survey of 360 international medical students who were in their final two years of their course, published in the Medical Journal of Australia (6 September), 33% said they saw themselves practising medicine in Australia in 10 years’ time. Only 28% saw themselves practising in their country of birth. The remaining students were undecided about their plans.

The main source of international students in December 2008 was Malaysia, which made up 1075 of the 2665 international students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate entry courses, the paper said. More than 500 international students were from Singapore and 360 were from Canada.
