As quoted from the article by Michael Woodhead:

Australia will finally have a national medical registration system next month as WA joins the other states and territories in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme, the Medical Board of Australia has announced.

In its latest communiqué, the MBA says WA has signed the necessary legislation to join the scheme, meaning that all medical practitioners will be registered under a single nationally consistent legislation and be able to practise anywhere in Australia.

The board also claims that the “teething problem” registration delays seen during the transition to the new national scheme in July are now being resolved.

It acknowledges that there have been problems with incomplete data on the online register, delays in processing applications by overseas-trained doctors and a lack of response to enquiries.

“These difficulties were not surprising given the scale and complexity of the task of changing over from the old to the new systems,” it says.

“The Board believes that these problems are being addressed and is looking forward to the scheme operating more smoothly now that the initial phase is over. In particular [the board notes] the high focus that AHPRA state offices are giving to ensuring that there are no unnecessary delays in processing registration applications.”

Doctors are also now being reminded of the need to re-register with the new national board, and the need to have indemnity insurance as a pre- requisite for registration. Doctors who fail to renew on time face a $325 late fee and will face deregistration if more than one month late in applying, with no automatic re-instatement.
