The AMA is calling for urgent government action at a crisis summit today as around 70 medical graduates across the country have been left without an intern position for this year – a figure which is expected to rise to 500 within a couple of years.
International students are the worst hit, despite their high course fees, because of priority being given to domestic students, say the AMA.

summit in Canberra, told 6minutes the medical system was “right on the razor edge of capacity verses demand” with 3,786 medical students expected to graduate in 2014 despite only 2240 internships being available last year.
He said: “The future holds more graduates and more pressure on the system so without significant investment and a better use of that investment, the system will fail.”
The AMA is also calling for more data and “robust modelling” to enable predictions on the number of doctors Australia have and will need in the future.
However, during the summit AMA Queensland President Dr Gino Pecoraro commented on the Twitter that: “Government continues to roll out the spin on this issue. Lots of talking and yet no solutions offered.”
