MORE than 30 medical students in Tasmania could miss out on internships next year, the Australian Medical Students Association claims.

Reports last week suggested there were 90 domestic and 14 international final-year students vying for 70 internships at the University of Tasmania. Earlier this year the Tasmania Government made a commitment to provide local internships for Tasmanian domestic medical graduates.

AMSA said the shortfall meant those unable to land an internship in Tasmania would have to try and find one interstate.

However, there was no guarantee these students would be able to find an internship in other states, AMSA president Ross Roberts-Thomson said.

"We have seen a significant increase in medical student numbers over the past six years, and the pressure for internships in many mainland states is now very high," he said.

While some states are coping better than others at present, it is believed all will have insufficient intern places to meet the surge of graduates in 2013. The number of medical graduates is expected to increase to 3427 in that year, but only 2800 intern places have been guaranteed for 2013 -- meaning a shortfall of more than 600 if that number does not increase.

However, Tasmania Minister for Health Michelle O'Byrne said AMSA's concerns were not supported by recent take-up rates.

"In the 2010 clinical year, 67 intern positions were offered in Tasmania and just 47 were taken up by Tasmanian domestic graduates," she said.

"Each year a number of Tasmanian graduates choose to seek positions interstate, and we have filled our surplus intern positions with interstate and international graduates."
