MJA Nine out of every 10 GPs are satisfied with their career, even though about one-third would like more pay and greater public recognition for the care they provide, a survey of the profession has found.

In one of the largest snapshots of general practice, almost 4000 GPs were asked about their work. The findings portray a profession that is overall very happy, and appear to give the lie to the view that morale in the specialty is at an all-time low.

It found 35% of participants were “very satisfied” and a further 50% “moderately satisfied” with their vocation. There was no difference in satisfaction levels whether doctors worked in rural or city settings.

Significantly, 90% of doctors questioned said they enjoyed the variety that life in general practice provided.

The biggest gripes were with pay, although 65% said they were satisfied with their remuneration. One-third of GPs were not satisfied with the recognition they received for their “good work”.
